The Center For Art and Humanities at Studio San Juan presents our 2008 Adult Summer Session of Master Artist Classes

John Robrock - Master Artist was awarded "Teacher of the Year" by the River of Words International Youth Art and Poetry Contest in May 2008 because of his demonstrated effectiveness as an art instructor. Now you have an opportunity to learn how to draw portraits from him. John earned a BA, MA and MFA in Studio Art from the University of Wyoming with a specialty in life drawing.

Jennifer Colby - Master Artist has BA and MA in Studio Art and MA and PhD in Arts and Humanities. She has taught K-12 through Graduate school and is an art writer, curator and practicing community artist specializing in acrylic painting, collage and monotype printmaking. She was the Monterey County Arts Educator - Champion of the Arts of the Year in 2007.

Learn to make one of a kind prints created with etching inks on archival paper using 24 inch KB etching press. You will learn to use a plexi plate and create collagraph plates, apply ink and create multiple varied prints off your unique plates. (Min. 4 students, Max. 8 students)


Monotype II Time to be arranged. 4 hours, Limit 4 students
$150 per person  
Continue the process in a smaller group or individually and create an edition of prints from plexi or collagraph plates. Monotype printing is a painterly technique that allows creativity within the fine art print medium. Private classes are also available at $100 Hour


Visual Art for Educators  Sat, August 23
$80 per person 10-12, 1-3 p.m. (working box lunch included)
Play with color, line texture, form, shapes and rhythm and learn the elements of art as well as how to integrate visual arts into lessons teaching reading, math and the state standards. Dr. Colby prepares teachers at CSUMB and teaches for the Lesley University Master's in Education. Find out why arts integration is inspiring teachers across the United States. This class for teachers is perfect for any level of arts knowledge as group and individual activities will inspire and renew your creativity. (Min. 6 students, Max. 16 students)


Day of the Dead Altar Boxes Sat, September 6
$80 per student plus material fee 12 - 4 p.m. (working box lunch included)
Celebrate Day of the Dead and San Juan Bautista's upcoming festival by creating your one of a kind altar box (possibly to exhibit). In a creative group atmosphere learn about the tradition and explore your personal imagery combining your photos and memorabilia with boxes and materials provided in class. Honor your ancestors, enjoy the folklore and join the celebration November 1 and 2 in San Juan Bautista. (Min. 6 students, Max. 16 students)

Michele Faia - Master Artist has been painting and teaching for over 30 years. She holds a Bachelor and master's degrees in art history. She is the author of Art in My Heart: The Power of Watercolor Mandala Making.

Watercolor Mandalas  Sat., July 26
$150 per person  10 - 2 p.m. (working box lunch included)
The mandala, or sacred circle, is an ancient symbol used to center oneself. Symmetrical, circular and always with a center, the mandala image represents journey inward in which the traveler can come to their heart, find peace and experience their inner divinity and wholeness. Participants are encouraged to create and paint a personal color wheel as a way to practice their watercolor washes at home. (Min. 4 students, Max. 16 students)

Bruce John Kleinsmith AKA Futzie Nutzle - Master Artist was featured cartoonist with the "Rolling Stone" magazine from 1975-80 as well as other international magazines in the ensuing years. Bruce is a renowned author, cartoonist, illustrator and fine arts artist.

Cartooning and Drawing Sat. August 2
$50 per student 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. (lunch not included)
Learn cartooning techniques as well as drawing in general. (Min. 6 students, Max. 16) Teens over 14 years old are welcome.

Mariabruna Sirabella - Master Artist is an MS, LMFT and a Laurea in Communication and Performing Arts from Bologna University, Italy and a Master in Counseling from CSUS, California.  Mariabruna has a holistic psychotherapy practice in Watsonville, California, is Adjunct Faculty at JFK University, CA and is a SoulCollage¨ Facilitator and Trainer. She teaches internationally in English, Italian and Spanish.

Dennis Gaxiola - Master Artist has over 30 years experience as a professional photographer and photojournalist.

Digital Available Light Portraits Sat, August 9
$80 per person  10-noon, 1-3 p.m. (lunch not included)
This is a hands-on class designed to teach techniques for creating successful portraits using existing light. The class will start with identifying the best light conditions and how to take advantage of them to achieve excellent results. In addition, students will learn how to modify the light through the use of reflectors, scrims and on-camera flash. Students should have a basic understanding of digital photography. (Min 6 students, Max 16 students)

Kira Carrillo Corser - Master Artist directs Arts Education at the Monterey County Art Council. Her silk paintings have been displayed at the Steinbeck Center and the Pacific Grove Art Center. She has an MFA from John F. Kennedy University.

Joyful, fluid, colorful paints decorate your silk scarf or banner. Learn the process of masking and painting the silk. Discover a highly creative and beautiful media with a passionate teacher. Design silks for wearing, wall hanging, theatre projects or displaying colorful banners in your home town. (Min 4 students, Max 12 students)
