California Missions Journey
Inspired by the celebrations in the San Juan Mission of the Virgen de Guadalupe, the El Teatro Campesino play describing the apparition of the Virgin, 20 years of exhibits at the gallery of "Images of the Virgin" and her research, Dr. Colby went on a journey of discovery in all the 21 California Missions. Beginning in January 2012, she visited each mission with an eye for representations of the Virgen de Guadalupe. In all but one of the missions she found what she was looking for. In addition she found more paintings and statues that tell the story of devotion to Mary. Fascinated by the history of the Franciscan fathers' journeys on the El Camino Real, she made a similar journey by car and photographed the current tourist experience. These photos are the basis for her banner paintings of acrylic on photo canvas. The exhibit provides a look into a personal journey, as well as asking questions about the influence of the California Missions on our history and present connections with culture, celebrations and devotion to Guadalupe and other Marian images. Each California Mission is represented in its geographical context, putting our own San Juan Bautista Mission into perspective. After this journey Dr. Colby is even more convinced that San Juan Bautista is a very special place.

Enjoy both of these women artists new to Galeria Tonantzin. Sherree's realistic paintings make you want to walk right into them while Jovita's have a magical feeling. You can meet both artists at the Artists Reception for both Jennifer Colby's Exhibit and the Garden Gallery exhibit on Saturday, September 15 from 5- 7 p.m.

Sherree says . . .
At a young age I realized that I was drawn to the colors, shapes and details of our Monterey County landscape and seascape scenes.  Although I did not follow a career in the arts, I continued to pursue my love of realism painting throughout my working professional life.  For over 30 years I have painted with oils, which is my favorite medium.  Painting in oils allows me to create paintings in which viewers can feel as though they are stepping into the scene (picture), To the left is a painting by Sherree Anderson.

Jovita Hilliker shares:  Art has always been a part of my life. My Grandmother, Pearl Tupper, was a self taught artist from childhood. She included me at a young age, in a lot of her art meetings, classes, and late night drawing and painting sessions. I grew up to feel and think like an artist.

My grandmother mostly worked in oils and pastels. For many years I believed that if you were to be a true artist, that is what you worked in. I've had experience in many different mediums. About twelve years ago, at my sons suggestion, I began to doodle in watercolor. At this time I truly found myself, and fell in love with watercolor. Below is a sample of Jovita's work.

We are creating the 21st annual exhibition of contemporary representations for the Virgin in her many manifestations across time and place including the ancient goddess Tonantzin, the Virgin of Guadalupe; what she means to you, the artist. This is an international exhibition with the goal of presenting many artistic visions from various cultural perspectives, both the reverent and the provocative, exploring contemporary re-examinations of the image of the Virgin.
This exhbiit is open to all women artists. You can download a prospectus by clicking here. 21st annual Images of the Virgin Prospectus
