Exhibit "Images of the Virgin" November 18, 2011 - January 15, 2012
We have just selected 18 women artists for Galeria Tonantzin's 20th annual exhibition of contemporary representations for the Virgin in her many manifestations as Mother of God, the ancient goddess Tonantzin, the Virgin of Guadalupe; what she means to the artist. This is a national exhibition with the goal of presenting many artistic visions from various cultural perspectives, both the reverent and the provocative, exploring contemporary re-examinations of the image of the Virgin. The following artists will be showing their work: Ferris Cook, Carole Belliveau, Lee Taiz, Laura Ortiz-Spiegel, Sofanya White, Mary Ann Balian, Maxine Olson, Michele Faia, Julia Mevi, Karen Rudolph, Susan Kraft, Rachel Van Dessel, Bonnie Bisbee, Valerie Runningwolf, Annette Wagner, Maria Orr, Ciara Bedingfield and Kristen Calvert-Chavez.
Our juror, Tricia Grame, Ph.D. teaches and curates in California, Italy and Malta independently and for the California Institute of Integral Studies and the Women’s Studies Program at Stanford University. She has organized over 40 exhibitions and she lectures nationally and internationally. She is an Art Commissioner for the Town of Danville where she resides. Her discovery, expression, and evolution of female iconography in her creative work, two and three dimensional art inspired by prehistoric female symbols, consists of four different series; Beyond The Symbol, The Vessel, Ballare and Woman In Stone. Dr. Grame’s research combines archaeology, religion, history, social issues and contemporary art, attempting to reveal a relationship of time, history and memory and the effects of the female symbol on the transformation of life into art and art into life.
